Ample opportunities for students to use English in a meaningful context.

1. Enrich English language environment

Fostering a vibrant and authentic language environment is the primary goal of the English department. Our English room is a popular spot for students to not only attend their English lessons but also to chill, relax, and chat with our NETs, Mr. Lo and Ms Mehak. We offer engaging storytelling sessions and various exciting English activities, such as buying food from the grocery store and ordering pizza further spark students' interest in English.

2. School-based writing workshop

Our goal is to introduce a variety of writing strategies to students and develop fundamental skills across different contexts. In addition to traditional writing practice, we integrate writing exercises into the curriculum to refine students' skills. We also emphasize process writing, an iterative approach that involves drafting and revising based on feedback. In this method, students create multiple drafts and revise them according to their teachers' comments. Teachers mark the penultimate draft for grammatical accuracy, allowing students to produce a polished final draft. Throughout this process, students have the opportunity to reflect on their ideas and refine their writing, which enhances their critical thinking abilities.

3. English activities

Our aim is to provide a comprehensive platform for students to develop a diverse range of skills in English. Each year, we organize an array of training sessions and competitions designed to engage and inspire our students. These include the Speech Festival and Time to Talk Competition from NET Section, where students can showcase their public speaking abilities.

In addition to these events, we join Professor Paws, who brings a fun and interactive approach to learning through learning about dogs, and Dr. Grammar, who helps students master the intricacies of language rules. At the same time, Bookworms fosters a love for reading, encouraging students to explore various genres and share their insights.

Additionally, we offer the Rugby English Active Learning Programme, blending physical activity with language learning, as well as opportunities in English Drama, where students can explore character and storytelling through performance. Our English Ambassadors Training further empowers students to become leaders in their language journey. We are continually seeking new opportunities to unlock and nurture the potential of our students, fostering their growth and confidence in the English language.

4. School-based Reading and Phonics Curriculum for P.1-6

For P.1-3, we have joined the Space Town Literacy Programme for KS1 (Space Town) which is an enhanced version of the Primary Literacy Programme - Reading and Writing (PLP-R/W). It includes additional aspects such as e-learning, self-directed learning and a self-evaluation tool for schools. The teaching of reading has been enhanced through the earlier introduction of guided reading and phonics strategies such as blending and encoding in P1. In addition, it provides students with the opportunity to develop the ability to transfer their knowledge to new situations. In this programme, communicative language learning is the main focus, where the four skills are taught interactively and real-life situations are experienced in the classroom.

For P.4-6, we provide a comprehensive reading and phonics programme. Lessons are full of fun and interactive activities with specific focus on developing the students’speaking and listening skills.

5. English Day and English Ambassadors

English Day is held every Wednesday, providing a valuable and enriching opportunity for students to practice their English skills in a fun and supportive environment. Starting early in the morning, NETs and our enthusiastic English Ambassadors warmly greet students at the school gate, setting a positive tone for the day ahead.

During the assembly, representatives from various classes take the stage to present in front of the entire school, showcasing their speaking abilities and creativity. This not only boosts their confidence but also fosters a sense of community as students cheer for their peers.

Throughout recess and lunch breaks, English Ambassadors organize engaging and interactive activities designed to encourage students to use English in a relaxed setting. These activities promote social interaction while practising their language skills. Students are encouraged to speak in English and participate in games in the English room, which becomes a lively hub of activity.

Additionally, the English room is open during lunch breaks and it creates a welcoming space where students can enjoy a variety of engaging resources. They can play English games and listen to stories which can enhance their language experience in an enjoyable ways. This comprehensive approach to language learning not only improves students' English proficiency but also instills a lifelong love for English.

6. English Fun Day

English Fun Day is a highly anticipated annual event that offers students an engaging platform for various activities. On this exciting day, students have the chance to participate in a wide range of booth games that encourage teamwork and friendly competition.

The event features the SLCPS Talent Show, where students can showcase their unique talents, from singing and dancing to poetry recitation and dramatic performances. This celebration of creativity not only boosts their confidence but also fosters a spirit of support among peers.

Another highlight of the day is the English Olympiad, which challenges students to apply their English knowledge in fun and competitive ways. To capture the moments, a photo-taking corner is set up featuring our beloved school mascots, Shek Shek and Tin Tin. Students can take memorable pictures with these figures, creating lasting keepsakes from a day filled with learning, laughter, and camaraderie. This combination of activities makes English Fun Day a truly enriching experience for all participants.
